Blockchain Security Standards Council Opens First Two Sets of Standards for Industry Review

The newly established council also calls for new members to help shape the future of Blockchain security

13 January 2025 — The Blockchain Security Standards Council (BSSC) is today opening its first two security standards for member review, marking a major milestone in its mission to secure blockchain ecosystems and establish a reliable foundation for trust and innovation in the digital economy.

BSSC Executive Director, Greg Kohn, commented:

“The release of our first two standards marks a significant step towards a more secure blockchain ecosystem. These standards will serve as the foundation for ongoing efforts to safe guard the integrity of blockchain systems. We encourage all stakeholders, from developers to operators, to join us as we shape the future of block chain security together.”

“BSSC is committed to engaging with the wider blockchain community to ensure these standards address industry needs and foster a secure, trusted blockchain ecosystem.”

The first two standards focus on Asset Integration and Node Operations, and are now available for General Members of the BSSC to review:

  • Asset Integration: This standard ensures digital assets, such as tokens, are safely and securely integrated into blockchain ecosystems. It covers critical aspects such as asset governance and the technical configuration required for digital assets to operate reliably within blockchain networks.
  • Node Operations: This standard defines the requirements for operating a blockchain node securely, focusing on the integrity, resilience, and safe participation of nodes within a blockchain network.

These standards represent the foundation of the BSSC’s security framework and provide actionable guidance for blockchain developers, operators, and stakeholders to strengthen their security posture.

BSSC is also announcing the next two standards currently in development, which will be released to General Members for review in Q1 2025:

  • Key Management: This will provide best practices for the secure handling and usage of cryptographic keys in blockchain environments, including block proposal, validation, and wallet custody.
  • Security Governance: This will establish comprehensive guidelines for implementing governance processes that ensure ongoing security across blockchain ecosystems.

A Renewed Call for Membership

As the BSSC releases its first standards and develops additional ones, it continues to call for industry stakeholders to join its mission. There are two key categories of membership:

  • Contributor Members: Play an active role in developing the content of BSSC’s standards. This offers a direct opportunity to shape the future of blockchain security in a collaborative and ongoing process.
  • General Members: Gain access to pre-release drafts of standards and provide feedback to refine them before finalization.

The members of BSSC include leading blockchain and technology organisations, such as Anchorage Digital, Bastion, Coinbase, Figment, Halborn, Fireblocks, Kraken, OpenZeppelin, Ribbit Capital, Turnkey and Bitgo.
